What is this settlement about?

Toyota agreed to a $78.5 million settlement over allegations that certain vehicles have defective ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs) susceptible to 'electrical overstress,' which can cause airbags and other safety systems to malfunction or fail to deploy in a collision. This is part of the same ZF-TRW ACU litigation behind the separate $62.1M Hyundai & Kia settlement. Class members can claim out-of-pocket recall costs, a residual cash payment, and non-cash benefits including a 12-year extended parts warranty.

Who's excluded: Benefits require submitting a valid claim form by the deadline; doing nothing means no payment.

How much can you get?

  • Out-of-pocket reimbursement

Reimbursement for recall-related costs: rental car (if no loaner provided), towing, childcare while waiting, unreimbursed ACU repair costs, and lost wages for drop-off/pickup at a Toyota dealer. Requires receipts.

  • Residual payment — up to $250

After out-of-pocket claims are paid, any remaining fund is distributed equally among qualifying class members who filed a valid claim — up to $250 each.

  • Non-cash benefits

A 12-year Extended New Parts Warranty on recall-installed parts, a vehicle inspection program for frontal-crash non-deployment, a recall outreach program, and possible rental/loaner reimbursement.

When will payments be made?

Residual payments are calculated after out-of-pocket claims are paid and depend on how much remains in the fund and the number of valid claims, so amounts aren't fixed in advance. Inspection and warranty benefits begin after final approval.
