What is this settlement about?

Hyundai and Kia agreed to a settlement valued at $62.1 million resolving claims that certain vehicles contain defective ZF-TRW airbag control units (ACUs) vulnerable to 'electrical overstress,' which can cause airbags and other safety features to fail to deploy in a collision. The case is part of the broader ZF-TRW ACU multidistrict litigation in the Central District of California — the same litigation behind the separate Toyota and Mitsubishi ACU settlements. Hyundai and Kia deny the allegations but settled to avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation. The court has granted final approval; claims are open through April 8, 2027.

Who's excluded: Out-of-pocket reimbursement is available only for recalled vehicles; owners of unrecalled vehicles become eligible for reimbursement only if a recall is later issued during the claims period.

How much can you get?

  • Residual payment — up to $350 / $150

A per-capita residual payment of up to $350 for recalled vehicles or up to $150 for unrecalled vehicles, regardless of whether you incurred any expenses. Determined after eligible reimbursement claims are paid.

  • Out-of-pocket reimbursement (recalled vehicles)

Reimbursement for reasonable costs to complete the recall — rental/transportation, towing, childcare, unreimbursed ACU repair costs, and lost wages for drop-off/pick-up. Requires receipts.

  • Non-cash benefits

A 10-year New Parts Warranty covering recall-installed parts against airbag non-deployment due to electrical overstress, plus a vehicle inspection program and a recall-completion outreach program.

When will payments be made?

The court has granted final approval. Residual per-capita amounts are calculated after all eligible reimbursement claims are processed and depend on the total number of valid claims and court-awarded fees and costs, so no fixed per-vehicle figure is guaranteed in advance.
