SAG-AFTRA Health Plan $950K Data Breach Class Action Settlement

Living people who were mailed a SAG-AFTRA Health Plan data-breach notice (around Dec 2, 2024) saying their information may have been impacted in the September 17–18, 2024 incident (~94,546 people). California residents get a double pro rata share. Free monitoring is automatic.

SAG-AFTRA Health Plan agreed to a $950,000 settlement (In re SAG Health Data Breach Litigation, Central District of California) over a September 17–18, 2024 incident in which an unauthorized party accessed a SAG-AFTRA Health Plan employee email account. Compromised data included names and Social Security numbers and, in some cases, health information, health-insurance information, and plan participant ID numbers. Because it involves protected health information for entertainment-industry workers, the settlement adds 18 months of medical-specific monitoring and gives California residents a double pro rata share (stronger CA privacy-law damages). SAG-AFTRA denies wrongdoing.

Who's excluded: Excluded are SAG-AFTRA Health Plan officers/directors, the judges and their staff/family, anyone criminally responsible for the breach, and anyone who validly opts out. If valid claims exceed the fund, all are reduced pro rata.

  A residual pro rata cash payment from the fund. Each non-California claimant gets one share; California residents (notified at a CA address) get two shares. No proof of loss — a sworn attestation covers California residency.

• Documented losses — up to $5,000

  Reimbursement for documented, unreimbursed losses traceable to the breach (incurred on/after Sep 17, 2024). Requires non-self-prepared documentation (receipts/statements).

• 18 months monitoring — automatic
